How I Dressed for New York Fashion Week

I'm back! After a long hiatus I'm happy to say its time to be back to your regularly scheduled programming.

This past weekend, my mom and I attended Christian Siriano's NYFW SS20 show!! I will make a blog post talking about the show specifically, but first, I'd like to talk about what it's like to go to a show as someone who isn't (yet) an industry professional. Mostly I'm talking about what to wear.

As you probably know, tickets to these shows are few and far between. Most people who get to see fashion week shows in person are industry professionals: buyers, stylists, fashion photographers, media, etc. So this was a big deal.

So how did I get to go? My mom is a badass. My mom was scrolling through Facebook one day and saw a teeny tiny advertisement that invited her to buy tickets for Christian Siriano's show. She is obsessed with Project Runway, and Chrsitian specifically. I am obsessed with anything fashion related. So she bought tickets, and we hoped they weren't a scam.

I spent hours pondering and researching what to wear. I was so concerned. I had no idea what kind of vibe to go for. I decided to just be myself. I like to describe my personal style as a combination of street style and girly with a splash of geometry. I love anything with sharp edges and hard lines (think Janelle Monae's 2019 Grammy's red carpet, or Britney Spears 2016 VMA's look).

I finally came to the conclusion to make my own skirt. I wanted something different than what everyone else has, and I wanted a skirt that was two different colors split down the middle. Sometimes when you know exactly what you want, it is just easier to make it than to try to find one already created. I dragged my friend to thrift stores, Joann Fabric, and the mall in search of the perfect materials. I ended up with two patent leather skirts, a blue and a black. I cut them both up, and sewed down the middle on both sides to create the skirt I wanted. I also had to change up the waistband to look more put together. It took a long time and a lot of hand-sewing, but I did it and fell in love with it.

The skirt was my main focus point, but I needed to complete the outfit. I had bought a clear jacket from Zara about a year ago. I was in love with the jacket but I had trouble finding a perfect outfit to wear with it for a while. When I saw Off White's Spring 2020 Men's collection titled "Plastic", I knew it was time to wear it.

I completed the look with a white bodysuit from Express and booties I got in Italy.

Here's some more pics from this look and the look I wore the next day around the city!

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for my thoughts on Christian Siriano's show!
